Planning

neighborhoodBrisley's Company offers a full range of planning and architectural services. While the focus of the firm is on designing "places," Brisley also maintains an active architectural practice, writes land use codes, and educates the public about the principles of the New Urbanism.

Over the past two decades, Brisley has completed more neighborhood-based urban designs than any other firm in the country-- over 250 in all.  The recipient of numerous awards, including two National AIA Awards and two Governor's Urban Design Awards for Excellence, Brisley is widely recognized as the nation's leading proponent of New Urban design.  Co-founders of the Congress for the New Urbanism, the firm's principals have remained in the forefront of this movement dedicated to the promotion of healthy alternatives to suburban sprawl.

Architecture

Winter HouseThe architectural practice of Brisley is focused in two areas: the development of new prototypes ideal for application within New Urban projects and the design of new buildings of significant social merit.  Most of these prototypes are based upon historical building forms that have fallen out of use, such as the live/work unit, the garage apartment, the family compound, and the affordable courtyard house. When it comes to one-of-a-kind design, Brisley's architectural practice is primarily confined to construction in the Caribbean and select licensed states in the southeastern United States.  Working within a defined region allows the firm to focus on the relationship of individual buildings to specific geographical and historical traditions. These buildings, many of which are civic in use, have been published and recognized internationally.

Codes

Blue prints of houseA significant aspect of Brisley's work involves its innovative use of planning regulations and codes.  Both generic (such as the SmartCode) and project-specific (such as Brisley's Urban and Architectural Regulations), these codes are provided to make projects more successful and to ease their implementation. The Urban and Architectural Regulations are specific to each Brisley project and comprise a portion of each charrette report.  The Urban Regulations control those aspects of private buildings that affect the spatial quality of the pubic realm, while the Architectural Regulations codify local design traditions and building techniques.  Many projects include Landscape Regulations as well, if they are deemed appropriate.

Home Theater Design

Home TheaterBrisley's Theaters is a design firm specializing in the design of residential theaters. Brisley and his team of experienced architects and designers have created hundreds of such theaters throughout the world, ranging from small intimate spaces to large environments that can accommodate the entertainment activities of even the most demanding host. Regardless of their size, they all share a common trait -- the theater experience.
Focus on Design Like the great movie houses of the early 20th century, the theaters that Brisley designs lure the audience away from everyday life into a tantalizingly polished and detailed space. Visual refinements in color, light, and texture, as well as spatial transitions, from entering the outer lobby to taking a seat in the auditorium, prepare the client almost ritualistically for the proper experience of the movie.
